Ten years ago today I was sitting in my fourth grade classroom. Me and two of my friends got called out of class to go home early. I was excited to leave, even though I wasn’t sure why. As we walked through the halls on our way to leave school we heard one of our teachers yelling, “terrorists! Terrorists!” I wasn’t sure what this word meant but I knew it wasn’t a good word. My friend’s mom took the three of us to their house and we played while I waited for my mom to pick me up. When she came to get me I was told that airplanes had crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City. I didn’t understand how that mattered to us… “We live in Georgia,” I thought.

Fast forward ten years. I am a sophomore in college. I’m sitting with my family watching a documentary on the History Channel showing home video footage from bystanders in New York that day who were unfortunate enough to have to witness this tragedy firsthand. The footage is really horrific and not easy to watch. I can’t imagine how it would be to re-watch the footage having personally known someone who was involved in 9/11 or even living in New York City.

My heart goes out to anyone who is still affected by this tragedy.
